Merlin was a gangling youngster and not very promising. After seven months I decided he should be placed in a suitable home. When his new owners had found him impossible to keep contained on their property, they asked that he should be found another home. So we took him back only to find he had matured into a very nice type of Cocker, so we began showing him. He obtained his title quite easily with a couple of Groups along the way. He was an excellent Showman and became Sire of several good litters. He Sired several Champions in spite of being at very limited stud. He Sired several colours and remained my top stud at Brightleaf for eleven years. In his senior years (eleven, twelve and thirteen), he won numerous Veteran Classes always enjoying his outings. Merlin was the last Son to be shown of his illustrious Sire CH. Brightleaf Bewinged and his equally well known Dam Brightleaf Blue Dawn. Merlin and CH. Brightleaf Blue Jeans were brothers and a sister, Brightleaf Dawn Blaze were all long lived and healthy strong dogs, which have left many Champions both here and in other kennels. Merlin ran quite happily with other males and never ever argued over a bitch. Merlin just walked away from a squabble. He passed on his good temperament which is to be found in many pedigrees today.

Brightleaf Gold Braid
 ( Brad )
Gold Braid was sired by CH. Leabern Lighting Strike (Imp. U.K.) and was born in 1989. He was only shown once and won the Sash donated by the Judge Mr A A Gormley a Gundog Specialists from Ireland, for the Best Gundog Puppy. Gold Braid was a rather reluctant stud and always in awe of the two   imports CH. Leabern Lighting Strike (Imp. U.K.) and Kavora Ebony Lad (Imp. U.K.) at stud  here at the time. Brad's Dam was Brightleaf Heartlight from a long line of my solid bred champions of past years and he proved a good nick with my solid bitches both black and gold. He was placed as a pet at a young age as I had so many males at that time.
